According to Ricardo Gomes and Sara Vannini, “Home is not just a place; it is a feeling. Home is not only a physical space, it is also an imagined one, a territory (in Spanish, territorio: [means] both a geographical and a mental place of identity).” How can photographs represent the complexity of the homes we create for ourselves?

In this 2-part workshop offered by artist Andrew Jackson, participants are invited to use their camera phones—or other cameras—to interrogate the space they call home, to show how they feel about the spaces and people encountered there.

During the first workshop, participants will look at a range of approaches and strategies to help them interrogate what makes a home, and will receive a brief that encourages them to explore this notion through photography in the following weeks. In the second workshop, participants will be invited to share the photographs produced from the brief in a group setting. The resulting images will be integrated into an upcoming presentation of Jackson’s project at the PHI Foundation.

These workshops are part of In heart and life and longing, a public engagement project developed by Andrew Jackson in collaboration with DESTA Black Youth Network. The project is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Relic Traveller: Where You and I Come From, We Know That We Are Not Here Forever by Larry Achiampong, which runs from September 9, 2021 to January 9, 2022 at the PHI Foundation.

Duration of each workshop: 1h30

Biography

Andrew Jackson
Andrew Jackson is a photographer and lecturer at London College of Communication and on the advisory panel of The Photo Ethics Centre. His works interrogate notions of place, belonging and selfhood, within intimate and personal interventions, and are held in the United Kingdom Government Art Collection, in addition to other public and private collections of art. These interventions focus on the themes of migration, displacement, and collective memory, but also seek to question and challenge how photography has traditionally narrated and represented stories of the diaspora. Originally from the UK, he is based in Montréal. andrewjackson.photography
