EXPERIENCE

Trained and graduated initially as a stage designer from The National School of Theater (Mexico City). Gutierréz uses sound and performance art to investigate how these aural conditions affect everyday life. Gutierréz is actively advocating listening practices while being one of the board of directors of the World Listening Project, formerly working with The Midwest Society of Acoustic Ecology, and currently as the scientific comitée of the Red Ecología Acústica México. Now, she is a Ph.D. student at Concordia University in the Department of Art and Humanities. Gutierréz is a recipient of the FRQSC Doctoral Award, developing her research-creation, Sono-(soro)rities, a multi-year sound studies project in collaboration with feminist scholars from Latin America and Canada.

Chantal Dumas’s work takes the form of narratives, soundscapes, compositions, listening tours and installations. Over the years, he has developed a thematic recurrence (space, time, territory) underlining an environmental awareness that combines with a keen interest in listening.

Dumas has been a resident at the Studio du Québec in New York (CALQ-2011) and at the Studio des Récollets in Paris (CALQ-2016), and has benefited from numerous artist residencies at Quebec artist-run centers. She has been awarded the Prix Opus - Concert en musique électroacoustique (2009, Qc) and the Bohemia (Czech Republic) and Phonurgia Nova (Fr) radio awards. Her album Oscillations planétaires, which evokes the geological world, was a finalist for Album of the Year at the Prix Opus 2019-20. Her work has been widely broadcast on European public radio stations and at international festivals.

She is regularly invited to take part in cultural mediation projects in various contexts (MeM, RAAM, Les Incomplètes, Espace Projet), where she invites the public to set off on a voyage of discovery of sonic territories. In fall 2023, she co-organized with Frédéric Dallaire the colloquium Le Partage des écoutes associated with the Université de Montréal's Faculty of Arts and Science - Department of Art History and Film Studies.

Rehab Nazzal’s video, photography and sound works have been exhibited and screened in solo and group exhibitions and film festivals in Palestine, across Canada and internationally. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Concordia university in Montreal and a lecturer at Dar Al-Kalima University in Bethlehem.

Sandra Volny (French/Czech) is an artist, researcher, and educator. Her sense-based artistic practice revolves around the perception of aural space. Working across diverse approaches combining listening, scientific investigation, and fieldwork, she produces installations, instruments, and videos. Volny completed a PhD in Art Sciences and Aesthetics at the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne (December 2017) by conducting a thesis research on “Surviving Aural Spaces,” which explores the persistence of sound in space in its material, sensory, and social constellations. Her current research and practice interests lie in navigating spaces through sound, sonic residues, “sonic fossils,” and connecting with other humans and non-humans by the act of listening. She is particularly interested in these occurrences where the intrinsic process of consciousness is built through sound into space itself and she considers the use of aural spaces as vectors that allow for individual and collective imagination to emerge. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Biological Sciences at the Université de Montréal and Chaire Médiane at the Université du Québec à Montréal. Her findings have been published in various magazines and academic journals, most recently at the MIT Press. Between 2019 and 2023, Volny received the Atelier Montréalais residency at Fonderie Darling. Her research has been the subject of solo and group exhibitions at the Musée d’art de Joliette, Darling Foundry, Clark Centre, FOFA Gallery, Centre d’exposition de l’Université de Montréal, Galerie Michel Journiac (Paris), Ionion Center (Cephalonia) and Raumlabor-267 (Braunschweig). Her works are in national and private collections, including those of the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, Hydro-Québec, and Majudia.

AM Kanngieser is a co-founder of the Institute for Freshwater Fish Futures and works in collaboration with Oceania-based anti-colonial storytellers, artists and grassroots organizers. They are the author of Experimental Politics and the Making of Worlds (2013) and Between Sound and Silence: Listening towards Environmental Relations (forthcoming), and have written for a range of interdisciplinary journals. Their audio work has been commissioned by Documenta 14 Radio, BBC, ABC Radio National, The Natural History Museum London, and Deutschland Radio, amongst many others, and has been reviewed in publications including The Wire, Quietus, Transmediale, Outline and Art Quarterly.

Seth Cardinal Dodginghorse is currently a part of the artist collective tīná gúyáńí (Deer Road) which also includes their mother, Glenna Cardinal. tīná gúyáńí was longlisted for the Sobey Art Award in 2022. Their music project lawrence teeth is currently finishing recording an album with a late summer 2024 release.
