We have come a long way since we first opened our doors in 2006.
Over the past few years, DESTA has made numerous organizational shifts to reflect the needs of our community. But the heart of our mission has never changed. Through an empowering approach, our underlying goal has always been to see Black youth thrive.
We are grateful to our community, our supporters, our collaborators, and our funders, as, without you, the work that we do would not be possible.
With 15 years behind us, we are thankful to be celebrating this incredible milestone with all of you!
Host, Preach
In the comedy industry for more than 3 years, Erich was pushed on the scene by Mike Ward, who discovered him at the “Bordel Comédie Club” where he was working as a doorman. Since that moment, Erich accumulated solo appearances everywhere, while continuing his work for the duo “Aba and Preach”. He developed his experience with his first “Aba and Preach” show for the Just For Laugh Festival in 2019 and it was an instant success! The “Aba and Preach” Youtube Channel has now more than 1M subscribers and continues to grow. Sharp, provocative, hilarious, and authentic, Erich will make you see the real things with a new perspective.
Spoken Word Poet, Roen Higgins
Roen Higgins is an award-winning Spoken Word Poet, Educator, dynamic Speaker, and Impact Coach. Her mission is to Elevate her audience with important life skills such as self-care, resilience, leadership, creative literacy & community well-being. Roen loves helping young people Emerge and Adults Shift towards Elevation. As a coach, she is dedicated to raising others to get unstuck and tap into their genius zone.
DJ KidCrayola
KidCrayola is a breaking through Haitian-Canadian artist in the Montreal music scene with her colourful mixes and music curation. Her unapologetic message of self acceptance and self-love is making waves in the city and has everyone dubbing her the Vibe Bender. Coming from a musical family like her older brother Don Karnage who was massively known in Montreal in the 90’s - ‘till the early 2000’s, she is already making a name for herself. And rightfully so, she has collaborated with big names like Mural and PHI Centre despite being considered green in the DJ scene for just 2 years. KidCrayola believes that all cultures, people and walks of life are beautiful, and she sees music as the avenue to have people accept and see that beauty in the world.
Dancers, Uplift514
Since January 2015, Uplift’s goal has been to elevate, stimulate morally and physically through Afro-Urban rhythms.
It is through the various influences of our dancers and different ethnic origins that we create a different energy where African dance meets popular dance / hip hop / tribal together to create a unique AFRO-URBAN choreography.
Uplift’s strength comes from its dancers / choreographers who are passionate about what they do. Mostly self-taught dancers who each share their own experiences on stage, ranging from clips to performances for international and local artists.
Band, Fredy V & The Foundation
Fredy V & The Foundation released their debut EP ‘One Step’ in the Fall of 2020. This collaborative process saw each member's experience and skill put into writing, composing, arranging and producing; giving light to catchy powerhouse songs that seamlessly combine R&B, funk, afropop and hip hop.

We are excited to announce a collaboration celebrating the talented alumni of the DESTA Food Chef Incubator! Chefs Evy Mendes, Marissa Leon-John, and our very own Berlin Reed will be serving up delicious snacks and drinks inspired by DESTA's incredible 15 year journey.
The event will also be live streamed on DESTA's Facebook page
Based in Little Burgundy, Desta Black Youth Network empowers Black youth between the ages of 18 to 35 to achieve their educational, employability and entrepreneurship goals through tutoring, skills training programs, mentorship, individual coaching, career guidance, access to internship opportunities, and employment in our in-house digital marketing agency.
